Artificial intelligence (AI) is the powerful force behind many of the new discoveries and advancements we have seen in healthcare. From hearing aids to biotech, these technologies have shown tremendous potential in transforming the industry for the better.

As AI in healthcare continues to grow and evolve, we decided to take a look at specifically what companies and organizations are using AI for in their operations. With so many new possibilities, it is interesting to see the innovative ways that these companies are adopting this new technology into their patient care approach..

How Johnson & Johnson is advancing healthcare with AI

Leading healthcare company Johnson & Johnson (J&J) is one of the many companies that have turned to using AI to make headway into the latest health advancements and discoveries. Here are a few of the ways this company is utilizing AI:

  • Improving surgical procedures

With AI in their new CARTO 3 System, J&J’s electrophysicists can create 3D maps of patient anatomy to use during surgeries. For example, surgeons are able to see a map of the inside of the heart during AFib catheter ablation procedures. This allows for increased effectiveness and efficiency that could significantly improve patient outcomes.

  • Accelerating drug development

Without the use of AI, drug development is a very lengthy process that could take many years to complete. Using AI to analyze medical data sets, researchers can better determine what causes certain diseases and what molecules would best interact with them. Optimizing those molecules leads to developing possible drugs that could treat the disease.

  • Empowering more targeted clinical trials

AI is being used to efficiently recruit patients for clinical trials that better meet the specific selection criteria. With AI and machine learning, researchers can locate clinical research sites that have a diverse set of patients that could benefit from the studied medicines. This is crucial for ensuring that these medicines will be developed to suit a diverse population of patients that are being impacted by the treated diseases.

How Philips and Mayo Clinic are using AI to improve cardiac MRIs

Philips collaborated with Mayo Clinic to advance MRI technology, specifically for cardiac MRIs. An MRI is an important part of treating heart disease, which has been recorded as the cause for 13% of deaths worldwide. MRIs can be very costly and have limited availability, making them hard to access for many affected patients. In addition, a traditional MRI can take a while to complete, often over an hour, which can lead to great discomfort, especially for patients that cannot handle small spaces very well.

Philips and Mayo Clinic are combining their AI technologies to help reduce the time patients have to spend getting an MRI scan as well as improve the ease of use for radiographers that might not have years of experience. They may also be able to develop lower-field-strength MRIs to provide a safe experience for those with implants that are sensitive to a traditional MRI’s high magnetic field. With the help of AI, access to MRI scans will be significantly improved and patients have the potential for a much better experience in their care.

AI is a revolutionary addition to the healthcare industry when used with the patients and healthcare professionals in mind. These advanced technologies are meant to further the efficiency and developments in healthcare that can improve patient outcomes and the overall patient experience.
