Information technology is a fast-growing industry expected to triple its current size in the next ten years. The industry is always changing, and we see new trends emerging each year that impact the workspace of many IT professionals across the globe. Let’s take a look at some of these trends that will shape the IT industry for 2024 and beyond.

1. Generative AI

As we have seen with some introductions of generative AI, this newer use of artificial intelligence will become more widespread amongst the IT industry. Generative AI is the use of AI in generating new content, such as text images, audio, and video. It is predicted by Gartner that over 80 percent of enterprises will have used GenAI APIs and models and/or deployed GenAI-enabled applications in production environments by 2026.

2. Edge Computing

Information technology professionals see large amounts of data that are processed and stored each day. With such vast numbers, it becomes increasingly difficult to process the data that is located in data centers that are not near the end user. In short, edge computing is a form of distributed computing where calculation and data storage takes place closer to the end user. The edge computing market is expected to reach $250.6 billion by 2024.

3. Increased Cybersecurity

As data breaches continue to increase around the world, it is more important than ever to invest more in cybersecurity services. Many corporations plan to expand their cybersecurity budgets and increase their cybersecurity staff. New innovative ways to protect data such as cybersecurity mesh are also being developed. This concept is meant to prevent exposure at each entry point of a network; if there is a breach, the mesh system should prevent access to other parts of the network.

4. Sustainable Technology

With the growing use of technologies such as AI, cryptocurrency, the Internet of Things and cloud computing, there is concern about the related energy consumption and environmental impacts that they might bring. We will see an increase in the use of sustainable technologies and digital solutions used to enable environmental, social and governance outcomes that will support ecological balance in the long-term.

5. Focus on Cloud Platforms

It is predicted by Gartner that more than 70 percent of enterprises will use industry cloud platforms to accelerate their business initiatives by 2027. With a majority of the IT market being tied directly to the cloud, remote “as a service” models are increasing rapidly. The Software as a Service (SaaS), Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Artificial Intelligence as a Service (AIaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS) markets are seeing significant growth.

6. AI-Augmented Development

The IT industry will experience continued growth in the use of AI technologies to aid software engineers in designing, coding, and testing applications. These tools allow engineers to spend more time on strategic activities and less on writing code. With AI-assisted software, there will be an improvement in developer productivity as well as a solution for the increasing demand of software to run the business.

7. Platform Engineering

Gartner predicts that platform engineering will become more important in the coming year. Platform engineering is defined as the discipline of building and operating self-service internal development platforms which will optimize productivity and the user experience.

New and changing technologies continue to dominate the IT industry as we see with these trends. Digital innovation is happening every day, causing IT professionals to adapt and use their skills to be ready for anything.
